Lettera aperta sul Social Forum Europeo alle autorità e ai cittadini di Firenze



Sappiamo della diffusa preoccupazione che nel Forum Sociale Europeo che si terrà fra il 6 e il 10 novembre prossimi, si possano infiltrare degli specialisti della violenza, come è avvenuto a Genova durante le manifestazioni del luglio 2001, anche se questo forum non contiene occasioni di scontro perchè non sono in programma manifestazioni contro nessuna istituzione ufficiale come i G8, la Banca Mondiale o il Fondo Monetario Internazionale.

Quasi tutti coloro che verranno hanno in comune la certezza che le politiche socio-economiche attuali minacciano seriamente il nostro futuro insieme alla vita stessa su questo pianeta sempre più malmesso, e credono che queste politiche debbano essere profondamente cambiate.

Il Forum Sociale Europeo dovrebbe essere condotto nello stesso spirito dei Social Forum internazionali tenuti in Brasile a Porto Alegre, capitale del Rio Grande do Sur. Ricordiamo che in nessuna delle due occasioni vi è stata traccia di violenze. I responsabili principali delle violenze a Genova, i cosiddetti Black Bloks, non facevano in alcun modo parte del movimento per cui simpatizzano coloro che saranno presenti a Firenze in novembre. Nessuno di noi aveva nemmeno sentito parlare dei Black Bloks prima di Genova. Infatti ancora oggi ignoriamo che cosa esattamente volessero ottenere e pensiamo che soprattutto ci fosse l’intento di screditare ciò che, senza di loro, sarebbe stato un grandissimo evento e un messaggio molto forte proprio perchè totalmente pacifico.

Sappiamo che esistono grossi interessi economici nel mondo a cui farebbe comodo distogliere l’attenzione dell’opinione pubblica dai problemi che ci preoccupano. Perciò chi, durante il forum sociale europeo, facesse atti di violenza a cose o persone sarà oggettivamente un promotore di quei grossi interessi, non dei nostri. Chiunque giustifica in qualsiasi modo la violenza non parla a nostro nome. (Quanti vogliono veramente combattere e modificare la politica delle banche non vanno a sfasciar vetrine, trasferiscono i propri soldi nelle banche etiche.)

Può valere la pena ricordare che anche se c’è una notevole diversità di posizioni fra coloro che hanno partecipato fin qui ai Social Forum, il principale comune denominatore è stato e resta quello di convertire la società dal suo attuale cammino suicida per dirigerla verso un’autonomia molto maggiore delle comunità locali, e verso un’economia che, invece di essere governata da imprese multinazionali incontrollabili e irresponsabili, protette da un mercato unico globale, sia nelle mani di attività economiche piccole e medie, le più congeniali con mercati regionali e locali. Queste attività possono sentirsi veramente parte della società in cui operano e avere per lei un senso di responsabilità, il che sempre meno si può dire delle multinazionali che stanno avviandosi a monopolizzare il mondo.

È certo che si può contare su di noi per fare tutto il possibile, in collaborazione con le pubbliche autorità, affinché il Social Forum Europeo sia un evento pacifico e festoso che possa entrare con fierezza fra quelli memorabili che Firenze ha ospitato.

LETTER ON THE EUROPEAN SOCIAL FORUM TO THE AUTHORITIES AND PEOPLE OF FLORENCE

We understand that people in Florence are concerned that the European Social Forum, due to be held in this city between the 6th and the 10th November, might conceivably be infiltrated by violent elements, as was the case in Genoa at the meeting of the G8 in July 2001

This should be unlikely as those who congregate at Florence in November will not be there to vent their opposition to the policies of any official body such as the G8, or for that matter The World Bank and the IMF.

Nearly all of them will be people who have in common a deep feeling that today's socio-economic policies are seriously threatening their future and indeed the future of life itself on this increasingly beleaguered planet, and consider that these policies need to be seriously reconsidered. 
We would like to remind you that the European Social Forum is to be conducted in exactly the same spirit as were the two Social Fora held at Porto Allegre, the capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul.
It must be stressed that on neither occasion was there any trace of violence.
What is more, those who were responsible for the violence at Genoa - the members of the so-called Black Blocs - were in no way part of the movement to which those who will be present at Florence in November belong to or sympathise with. None of us had even heard of the Black Blocs before Genoa. In fact we still ignore exactly what it was trying to achieve, and fear that it was above all to discredit what, without them, would have been a marvellous event and one that would have sent out a powerful message to the world at large. We know that there are economic powers that are keen to divert public opinion from the problems that preoccupy us. Whoever uses violence at the European Social Forum, whatever be the pretext, will be promoting their agenda not ours. And whoever encourages people to commit acts of violence does not speak in our name.

It might be worth mentioning that though there is considerable diversity of views among the people who have so far participated in the Social Fora, the main accent was, and remains, on moving our society from its present suicidal path to one that is more localised, with greater power to local communities, and with an economy that, rather than being run by uncontrollable and unaccountable multinational companies catering for a global economy, is instead in the hands of small and medium sized companies catering for a more local or regional market, companies that would feel that they were really part of the society they work in and that are imbued with a sense of responsible towards it, as is less and less the case with the multinational corporations that are taking over today.

What is certain is that we can be counted upon to do everything we can to cooperate with the authorities in assuring that the Social Forum will be a peaceful and joyful event, one that the City of Florence will be proud to have hosted.
